RET was founded in 1955 by an American clinical psychologist, Albert Ellis.
Ellis maintained that emotional and behavioural disturbance was primarily caused
by rigid and absolutistic beliefs in the form of musts, should, have to's, got to's -
demands we make on ourselves, others, the world.
Ellis and Becker (1982) assert that the "two most common [work] problems are anxiety
about your job performance (along with a fear of losing your job) and anger towards
your boss, supervisor, employees, or other co-workers".
The HMSO report 'Mental Health at Work' attributed 60% of illness to mental or emotional problems.
These are caused by stress, emotional and personal problems.
