When one thinks of creativity the first thing that crosses our minds are artists, authors, designers etc., people who use creativity in their everyday life. And if we are in traditional jobs, we assume that their is no room for creativity, I mean, we are after all, just a cog in the wheel. We do not imagine that there is access for creativity in our day to day work.
It is a myth that only a few are creative. Creativity comes in many shapes and sizes and there are enough studies and claims by scientists that preschoolers are better at solving problems because of play. We were all preschoolers, but some have been nurtured away from creativity. The older one becomes the more the societal pressure of performance forces norming and pushes us towards conforming to rigid behaviour patterns.
The nature of norming and conforming is strong and therefore it gets difficult when we get stuck in it. And ‘stuck’ you will feel, because it is pre-programmed in our genes to grow, to change and develop. Real development happens with exploration and with our ability to challenging the status quo.
First and foremost, let’s not get burdened with the idea that creativity is a far-off notion. Because during your day you are unknowingly being creative in your day to day tasks. Whether that be looking for a new way to dodge the traffic, or dodge an irate boss, or if it is to cook a new meal out of yesterday’s left overs, or to save yourself from your spouses wrath when you are late for dinner for the fourth time in a row. All this requires you to exercise your creativity. At the end of the day, it is your creativity that helps you get the best out of life.
Most adults spend eight hours in their place of work. This place needs to be uplifting to get the best results out of people. The environment has to have flow and movement to avoid stagnation.
Then why is it that when you go to work or are a business owner, that you’d rather do the same thing every day and follow the norm? Mainly because you have been conditioned to believing that you are okay and if you go out of the norm, you might lose your business or your job, which pays for your comfortable life. It is your fear that prevents you from trying new ways to do old things. Fear of failure.
This is a learned behaviour and you will be surprised to know that there is an exact point in time when it occurred. So take a moment to think about the experience where you felt safer to be like everyone else. When you found security in not standing apart from the crowd. That is the time that you decided to minimize your uniqueness, your talents and your limitless creativity.
It is time to break the pact with that part of ourselves that feels safe in familiarity. It is time that we remove the shackles of slavery towards finances and begin to brainstorm and transform rather than conform. Once your remove the fear and start to explore your world once again through creativity you will notice that life will open new dimensions that were not available to you before.
The key is to get out of your comfort zone and thrive with the joy of living.
Being open-minded actually means holding no bias while looking at all the options. It is non judgmental exploration of numerous possibilities that are available. We can continue to delve into numerous options with panoramic and frameless intent.
Since we are all unique individuals with unique genetic coding, unique temperaments and unique experiences that continue to define us, nobody else’s tried and tested formulas can work on us. We may take cues from others, learn from their successes and failures but finally define our own plan.
If I’ve learned anything in life so far, it’s that we’re never really headed where we think we are – there are always twists and turns along the way that lead us onto a path that we didn’t even see coming. And to enjoy this journey wholly along the way, we can’t ignore the power and importance of the mindsets we embrace.
If you feel like you are trapped in a cycle of negativity, where you dread your days or feel a lack of vitality and exuberance in your life, then you need to begin to use self talk to start the cycle of motivation.
When your negative mindset starts to raise its head and make you dread your days ahead and you begin to feel trapped in your situation, remember that it is just your mind playing tricks. A little bit of mindfulness will draw you to the understanding that you are not a slave to your mind, but really have the ability to harness your thoughts to create positive emotions for you.
One this realization opens up for you will know you can move from a place of dread to a place of hope.
Self-empowerment is worth working for all the time. Live the life you dream of by making the small changes in your thoughts and outlook.
Your soul’s purpose is to experience new things. Don’t let your fear hold you hostage. Be intentional while you are living.
I will end with a quote by an American author, Norman Cousins: The true tragedy in life is not death, but what we let die inside of us while we live.
As the world celebrates Mental Health Awareness Day on 10th October, I’m thankful that the topic of mental health is being discussed on the global level. But there’s still a long way to go in order to understand, emphasize and help the issues surrounding mental health.
The facts and statistics surrounding mental health in India give little hope to us. Over 150 million Indians are in need of mental health care in India but the facilities provided to them are obsolete and difficult to obtain.
Being a doctor of alternative therapy and a long standing champion of mental health awareness, I’ve spent the length of my career in helping people unleash their inner potential and cope with the mental health issues they are dealing with.
